Why Women Need Archetypes

Why Women Need Archetypes: Finding Yourself in the Stories Older Than Us

October 05, 2026•3 min read

The Question Beneath the Roles

Somewhere along the way, most of us were handed a list of who we were supposed to be. The good daughter, the devoted partner, the nurturing mother, the capable professional, the one who holds it all together. We learned each role so well that we forgot to ask who was wearing them.

After years of sitting with women in circles and one-on-one work, I've noticed that the question underneath almost every struggle is the same:Who am I when I'm not performing for anyone?

That's where archetypes come in.

More Than Pretty Symbols

Archetypes get a bad reputation as the fluffy side of the work, something that lives on shiny altars and in aesthetic Instagram posts. But an archetype isn't a costume you put on. It's a pattern, a living map of the way women have moved through the world for thousands of years.

The Maiden, the Mother, the Wild Woman, the Priestess, the Queen, the Crone, the Dark Goddess. These aren't characters to become. They're mirrors. They're ways of recognizing the parts of you that already exist and have been waiting for language.

Language for the Unnamed

It's funny, isn't it, how much of womanhood we live without words for it? The rage that surfaces with no logic. The tenderness that wants to hold everything. The part of you that craves solitude and the part that craves a circle of women to dance with. Without a framework, these pieces can feel contradictory, like proof that something is wrong with you.

Archetypes give those experiences a name and a lineage. Suddenly the exhaustion isn't weakness, it's the Crone asking for rest. The fire isn't too much, it's the Wild Woman refusing to be tamed. You stop asking "What's wrong with me?" and start asking "Who is trying to speak?"

Integration, Not Perfection

I want to be clear about something, because I've seen this work get flattened into idealized perfection. The goal is not to pick your favorite archetype and live there. It's not to be only light, only soft, only wise.

Every woman holds the whole spectrum, the Maiden and the Mother, the Lover and the Warrior, the nurturer and the destroyer. Wholeness comes from integration: letting each part have a seat at the table, including the ones we were taught to hide. The shadow side of an archetype isn't a flaw. It's often where the most power has been buried.

Womanhood as a Cycle

Womanhood is not a straight line. We move through seasons, in our bodies, in our lives, and in our identities. Some seasons we are creating, some we are caring, some we are burning down what no longer serves, and some we are simply still.

Archetypes help us honor that cycle instead of fighting it. They remind us that we are allowed to change, that no single version of us has to be permanent, and that the woman we were five years ago still lives in the woman we are today.

Coming Home to Yourself

I can't tell you who you are. But I can tell you that the stories have been holding a place for you all along. I can't hand you an identity, but I can invite you to sit with the women who came before you and see which ones feel like home.

When we remember the archetypes, we remember we are part of something much larger than our own story. And somehow, that makes our own story feel even more sacred.

So maybe the invitation is this: stop trying to fit into the roles you were handed, and get curious about the ones that live in your bones.

If this stirred something in you, my Wild Sovereign Woman Journey is opening soon. Email me at [email protected]and let's connect when the doors open.
